Maine voter ID initiative headed to Legislature for consideration

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows confirmed on Wednesday that her department validated the signatures required for the citizen petition to require identification at the polls. As stipulated by the state constitution, the initiative will now go to the Maine Legislature for consideration, which can either enact the bill as written or send it to a statewide vote in November 2025. Maine requires identification and proof of residency in order to register to vote but is among 15 states that do not require voters to present identification while at the polls.
