Frustration and persistence for activists on the 56th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act

The last time Congress voted to reauthorize the Voting Rights Act in 2006, Helen Butler got the chance to attend the bill-signing ceremony by President George W. Bush in the Rose Garden at the White House. “We thought that, at least for another 25 years, we would be protected,” said Butler, who lives in Morgan County, Ga., about 90 minutes east of Atlanta. “But of course, here we are again.” Vanessa Williams, The Washington Post.
