Local election workers in western NC take stock post-Helene

Spotty cell phone service, damaged roads, water shortages, and power outages are challenging elections offices in western counties, where staff are also facing personal losses. State Elections Director Karen Brinson Bell said staff members in those offices are safe, but some have “total losses at their personal properties.” Elections offices in 14 of the 22 counties were closed Monday and will likely be closed for several more days, she said. Considering the extent of the disaster, the State Board of Elections voted unanimously Monday to give counties where elections officials are struggling through Hurricane Helene’s aftermath the flexibility to reschedule meetings where board members review and approve absentee ballots.
