T he California Voter Foundation (CVF) released Ten Recommendations to Accelerate California’s Vote Count and deliver more timely results, without jeopardizing voter access and security protections that define the state’s election system. This is the second round of recommendations following last month’s report, California’s Long Count: Examining Efficiencies in Ballot Processing for Earlier Election Results, which identified fixable operational challenges. Today’s recommendations go further—identifying additional policy changes needed in state law, public reporting, election infrastructure, and voter behavior—to shorten the time it takes to count ballots and call close races. The full list of recommendations is available here. “California doesn’t have to choose between an accessible, secure election system and timely results,” said Kim Alexander, president of the California Voter Foundation. “Our research shows we can address the long count while preserving—and in some cases strengthening—the protections that make California elections accessible and trustworthy. These recommendations give lawmakers, counties, election officials, and voters each a role in shortening the count while strengthening confidence and reducing opportunities for misinformation.”
