  • Securing American Democracy: A Conversation With Sen. Adam Schiff
    Date: September 18, 2025
    Location: Washington, DC
    Category: Panel Discussion

American democracy is being hollowed out from within as President Donald Trump’s administration rapidly erodes our institutions and consolidates unprecedented powers in ways that hurt the American people. The Trump administration is actively attacking judicial and legislative checks and balances, weaponizing law enforcement to engage in politically motivated investigations and prosecutions, and strong-arming independent media and civic institutions into bending to the president’s will. The deployment of federal forces and the military in American cities is just one of the most recent examples of a rapid escalation of the administration’s authoritarian policies that must be dealt with head-on.

Sen. Adam Schiff is working to strengthen America’s national security and system of checks and balances. He was instrumental in investigating the January 6 insurrection on the U.S. Capitol. His leadership has proven crucial in navigating the backsliding of our democracy while pushing for critically important reforms that would build a stronger and more accountable system.

Please join the Center for American Progress for a conversation with Sen. Schiff moderated by CAP President and CEO Neera Tanden. It is featured as part of CAP’s series “What’s Next: Conversations on the Path Forward,” which brings leaders to CAP to offer ideas on how to respond to this moment.

  • The Campaign to Undermine the Midterms
    Date: September 18, 2025
    Location: Online
    Category: Webinar

The Constitution gives states and Congress the power to run elections, and the president has virtually no role in the process. Yet President Trump ignored this fact and issued an executive order in March that aims to overhaul the nation’s election systems. His administration is dismantling a federal agency responsible for protecting election security. And it has targeted and threatened election officials and others who keep elections free and fair, while supporting those who undermine elections, including the January 6 rioters.

The Brennan Center is connecting the dots between these unprecedented, and in some cases illegal, moves: They are part of a concerted push to undermine American elections. And that drive will likely gather momentum as the 2026 midterms approach.

Join us on Thursday, September 18, at 3 p.m. ET for a live virtual event with Brennan Center experts. They will discuss the Trump administration’s coordinated strategy to meddle with the next election and ways to protect the integrity of the vote.

  • Democracy at 250: From Gerrymandering to Genuine Representation
    Date: October 21, 2025
    Location: Washington, DC
    Category: Panel Discussion

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, questions of representation and democratic legitimacy are front and center. From partisan gerrymandering and primary systems that drive polarization to calls for proportional representation and ranked-choice voting, Americans are increasingly debating how electoral structures shape the health of our republic.

This event—part of R Street’s 250th Anniversary Series—brings together R Street’s Governance Policy Director, Matthew Germer; political analyst Chris Stirewalt; and legal scholar Walter Olson to explore the landscape of electoral reform and what it means for American democracy at 250.

    Together, they will examine:

    • How current electoral practices affect representation, accountability, and public trust.
    • The range of reforms under discussion, from proportional representation to ranked-choice voting and beyond.
    • The legal, political, and cultural barriers to reform.
    • How the Founders’ principles—equality, popular sovereignty, and civic virtue—might guide us in strengthening democratic institutions today.

A reception will follow to continue the conversation.
