Super Tuesday Election Day Dispatches
Super Tuesday Dispatches
Voters in 15 states head to the polls, drop boxes and mail boxes today
It’s Super Tuesday in America and your electionline “team” will be with you throughout the day providing updates and posting all the news that’s fit to post.
If they haven’t already, voters in 15 states head to the polls, mailbox and drop boxes cast their ballots today, some just for the Presidential Preference Primary and some for state and local primaries as well.
The 15 states are: Alabama, Alaska (Republican primary), Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Virginia.
Democrats in Iowa will also be completing a party-run, by-mail primary/caucus hybrid. And Democrats will caucus on American Samoa.
A few things to know if you’re new to all of this and a refresher for those who’ve been following elections for a while in case you’ve forgotten. In any process that includes millions of people, there are going to be snafus, hiccups, and honest mistakes.
- Some poor janitor is going to oversleep and a polling place will open late;
- Voting machines may jam, fail to boot up, not be closed down properly, etc.;
- Results websites may crash;
- There may be lines (whether or not they are moving is the real issue);
- There may be a power outage, there will be a gas leak, but voters will still be able to vote and
- Someone, somewhere in America may accidentally crash their car into a polling place.
If we miss something that you think is relevant, please email us (mmoretti@electionline.org) or send us a Tweet @electionline and we’ll get it posted.
We’ll provide updates mid-morning (10ish), in the afternoon and evening and of course in the March 6 Daily News.
It’s important to keep in mind too that many media outlets update the same link/story throughout the day so if a headline on a link doesn’t match the headline to the story you pull up, scroll down!
Our first batch of stories are up where they usually are in the Daily News section, so check there to get all your early morning news.
11 am Update
It’s just about 11am on the East Coast and all polling places for Super Tuesday are now (or at least they should be) open.
Unclear if the same rules for Fight Club apply to elections, but so far it’s pretty quiet out there. Most of the stories we have for you at this check in are holdovers from yesterday or early this morning that didn’t make our 6am Daily News post.
And just your regular reminder that many media outlets update the same link/story throughout the day so if a headline on a link doesn’t match the headline to the story you pull up, scroll down!

4pm Update
The biggest news out of Super Tuesday at this point had nothing to do with elections and everything to do with social media. For a while, Facebook, Instagram and Threads as well as other online platforms were all down for a period of time.
During a late-morning call, a senior official at the Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said CISA was aware of the social networks being down, but that they were not aware of any election nexus.
Additionally during the call, a senior official said that at that time they did not have any specific or credible threats to today’s election operations.
Otherwise it’s been a relatively quiet Super Tuesday with only minor problems popping up.
The only big news is that before the system went down, Taylor Swift used her Instagram account to encourage people to vote.
While polls won’t close for a few hours yet, unless there are any major issues, this will be our last post for a very quiet Super Tuesday.
