12:45pm Update
It’s mid-day on the East Coast and polls are now finally open nationwide, even in Hawaii and Alaska and we’re less than six hours till the first polls start closing!
We’ve had some continued reports of voting technology issues, most recently in Alabama. Also, according to a social media post by Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren, voters are reportedly being turned away from the polls in Apache County, Arizona because voting machines are down.
In Florida, the statewide voter look-up tool is experiencing issues. “We have received word that the Voter Info Lookup, a widget found on our website to assist voters in accessing their voter information, is intermittently having problems populating information. We assume it’s due to volume. This is a statewide issue,” said Lisa Arneaud, with Broward’s Supervisor of Elections Office.
On the election security front, state and local officials addressed bomb threats that came into polling sites in Fulton County, Georgia. The threats were “non-credible,” the officials said, and polling sites in Georgia’s most populous county are secure on Election Day.
And because we like to end every update on a positive, or in this case pawsitive note, the Helen Woodard Animal Center in San Diego County, California is hosting a pop-up adoption event at one polling place in Rancho Santa Fe, with four-legged fur babies up for adoption and of course pets!

2:30pm Update
Scattered technology problems persist which are leading to long lines in some counties, but voting continues across the country with relatively few problems when you consider the number of people voting today.
As happens every election, there’s been a gas leak forcing the evacuation of one polling place, there’s been a power outage at another and for those keeping track at home, we’ve had our first car into a polling place. This one in Tompkins County, New York. “Tompkins County can confirm no malicious intent related to the accident,” says Tompkins County communications director Dominick Recckio. Polling equipment is being “securely moved” to a community room located at 101 Conifer Circle, within the same apartment complex, and will be available to voters after 2pm.

4:15pm Update
Threats of violence have been minimal so far today. Voting in several Maine towns continued despite more than a dozen schools, including at least five that serve as polling places, going into lockdown over false reports of a live shooter. In response to various crisis lines receiving threats of armed individuals on multiple school campuses around the state, the Maine State Police issued a statement saying the reports are not credible. The Maine Secretary of State’s office confirmed that voting itself was not interrupted, although in South Portland there was a temporary pause on people going in and out of the building.
Voting machines inside some Story County, Iowa precincts didn’t work, and local political party leaders said election workers must count ballots by hand at those sites after polls close at 8 p.m. Story County Auditor Lucy Martin said machines did not read “certain ballot styles” at about 12 of the county’s 45 polling locations. “We don’t know why,” she said. “The ballots were tested. The machines were tested.”
In California, PG&E is widening its planned public safety power shut-offs, leaving more polling places in the outage footprint as dry, windy weather raises the potential for dangerous wildfires. “PG&E has delivered temporary generation for each of these polling locations,” the utility said in an update on its website. “However, if power needs to be shut off for safety, it would occur after in-person voting has ended.”
As of right now, voting will be extended in several locations including Cambria County, Pennsylvania and parts of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In Arizona, the Navajo Nation has requested that voting be extended in Apache County. And the Democratic Party has filed a motion to extend voting in Jefferson County, Kentucky.

6:20pm Update
Polls have begun to close on the East Coast. And while isolated incidents remain, it is still a relatively smooth election day, especially if you’ve been doing this job for a while!
There have been some incidents of confrontations at the polls including in Connecticut, Hawaii, Kentucky, and New York.
In Colorado, Denver District Judge Kandace C. Gerdes has denied the Libertarian Party of Colorado’s request to decommission any voting machine associated with the leaked passwords and require counties to restart counting ballots by hand. The party filed a lawsuit against the Secretary of State’s office on Friday in response to the announcement that passwords to many of the state’s 2,100 pieces of election equipment were posted online.
The Fayette County, Pennsylvania Bureau of Elections is requesting the court step in regarding a municipality judge of election who, despite being told not to, is claiming that he will count the votes for each presidential candidate by hand. The petition was filed Tuesday after the bureau stated that Washington Township Judge of Election, Vincent Manetta, told workers that he would count the votes by hand after the polls closed.
And absolutely awful news from Missouri. A couple who were scheduled to serve as election judges in Wright County were killed when their car was caught up in flood waters and they tried to swim to safety. “The Wright County Clerk’s Office is saddened by the loss of life that occurred early this morning of two poll workers. Mrs. Pederson, the Wright County Clerk, is not releasing their names out of respect and privacy to the family, as reported by the Wright County Sheriff. This loss of life occurred as a result of swift, high water from the storms that came through the area the night before. This is a tragic loss for Wright County. They were dedicated citizens who valued fair and honest elections. They will be missed. Ms. Pederson states, ‘This is a terrible loss for Wright County. This couple were wonderful people who donated their time to serve their community. We will miss them dearly and the service they provided to my office.’”
