electionline.org
It’s Election Day in America and your electionline “team” will be with you throughout the day providing updates and posting all the news that’s fit to post.
Despite high early turnout in-person and by mail, polls are still expected to be busy today and we’ll be doing our best to track all of that. If we miss something that you think is relevant, please email us (mmoretti@electionline.org).
We’ll be providing updates all day, but look for them around 9 a.m., 12 p.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Depending on how things are going we may need to add some late morning and afternoon posts. If there’s breaking news, we’ll update this site as quickly as possible and you can always check on X @electionline, Threads @electionline, and BlueSky @electionline.bsky.social
It’s important to keep in mind too that many media outlets update the same link/story throughout the day so if a headline on a link doesn’t match the headline to the story you pull up, scroll down!
Our first batch of stories are up where they usually are in the Daily News section, so check there to get all your early morning news.
Good luck! And may the gods of democracy have mercy on our souls.
9am Update
While polls have now officially closed on Guam, polling places throughout a large swath of the country are now open.
Weather-related issues, and ballot scanners in one New York county are the big headlines so far this morning.
Numerous polling places in Florida had to be moved due to flooding. Storms forced the closure of at least one polling place in Oklahoma and Colorado officials are working to get ballots to flood-affected voters. Wet weather is expected in a number places today and as elections folks know, that can wreak havoc on paper ballots. We’ll be keeping our eye on that.
Ballot scanners were down throughout Westchester County, New York. The county executive told the news media that the board of elections is working with the vendor to get them back online. In the meantime voters can cast a paper ballot and place it in a secure box. New York Attorney General Letitia James said her office is monitoring the issue. “Westchester voters can still safely fill out and turn in their ballots at their polling locations. Your votes will count,” she wrote.
Additionally, according to KTVB7, key portions of the Idaho secretary of state’s website are down this morning. As of 6 a.m. Mountain Tuesday, the “Where Do I Vote?” and “View Sample Ballot” functions were not pulling results. When an address is entered, the website says no elections are currently available. On the “Upcoming Elections” tab, the website says “No data found.”
Here’s our first round-up of stories that includes some from overnight as well. We’ll do our best to work around paywalls, but journalists have to eat too. Also, many media outlets update the same link throughout the day so if the headline you see doesn’t match what’s posted, scroll down.

10:30am Update
As predicted, we’re back before our 12pm scheduled update!
Earlier issues with polling place relocation in Florida and equipment malfunctions in New York persist. Other Election Day issues that seem to be cropping up–gas leaks, power outages, etc.–are fairly typical for longtime election observers.
St. Charles County, Missouri has seen our first disruptive gas leak of the day. This problem occurs somewhere every election, big or small. Also in Missouri, power outages are affecting Kansas City-area polling places.
Oklahoma County, Oklahoma voters are experiencing delays at some polling places because of issues with voting machines at several precincts. Election Board Secretary Doug Sanderson says such issues are not unusual. He says ballots affected by the problems are placed in locked emergency bins and will be counted. Technicians are being sent to the polling locations to determine the cause of the problems and get the machines working again, Sanderson says.
There are phone issues affecting county offices in some parts of Virginia including the registrar’s office in York County but polling places are not impacted.

12pm Update
Polls are now open nationwide in America, including Alaska and Hawai’i (but not Guam, obv).
While the major pre-election concern was federal interference, so far there have been no reports of federal law enforcement at polling places and there have not been any reported issues with Department of Justice monitors.
We’ve had our first security threat of the day in Lucas County, Ohio. Toledo Public Schools confirmed a call for a bomb threat came into Beverly Elementary School, where Toledo police are currently conducting a sweep of the building. The site is being used as a polling place today. Lucas County Board of Elections director LaVera Scott confirmed she is actively gathering information regarding the incident and is working to confirm whether all poll workers at the site are safe.
We’ve also had our first ballot shortages of the day. A polling location in Prince George’s County, Maryland, ran out of paper ballots Tuesday morning, causing a backup of voters, according to a voter and officials at the site. One voter told WJLA that the problem stemmed not from turnout, but a printing error that left the ballots incomplete.
Meanwhile in Kansas, voters at a polling place in Linwood, Kansas, told KSHB 41 News there were not enough ballots Tuesday morning. The Leavenworth County Election office says they did not order enough ballots for voters, and those hoping to cast their ballots waited more than an hour for ballots to arrive.
Westchester County, New York remains, as best we can tell, the only place experiencing countywide equipment issues. All other issues seem contained to individual polling places. Elko County, Nevada officials say that due to a temporary technical issue, voting machines at the Jackpot polling location are unavailable. Voters may continue to cast their ballots using paper ballots available at the polling center. Election staff are working to restore the voting machines and expect them to be available later in the day.
The South Carolina Election Commission website crashed earlier today. WIS was told the site came back up, then went down again after a reboot. The site was working again as of 11 a.m. Tuesday morning.

1:30pm Update
Federal authorities charged Robin Martin of Oklahoma with sending hundreds of letters containing nonhazardous white powder to public officials ahead of the 2024 and 2026 elections. Martin is charged with conveying a hoax and mailing threatening communications. Martin was arrested Monday and was expected to make an appearance Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City. Investigators believe more than 700 mailings appeared to be associated with the same sender. They were addressed to election officials, members of Congress, pollsters, news media and federal law enforcement, FBI agent David Cole said in an affidavit.
In North Carolina, tour counties experienced “minor delays” on Election Day that could extend the time to vote at those precincts. Some polling places in Hertford, Gates, Lenoir and Wilson counties experienced delays Tuesday “due to various technical issues,” said State Board of Elections Executive Director Sam Hayes in an Election Day news conference.

3pm Update
While there have no doubt been a smattering of issues nationwide, it has been a relatively quiet Election Day if you’re used to watching the news.
Of course, that quiet doesn’t mean the conspiracy theorists have stayed quiet. The New York Times reports that what problems have occurred have spurred online conspiracy theorists to spread false information online. Joe Scott, the Broward County, Florida election supervisor, lamented the trend. “If anything happens with the election, people immediately go to conspiracy theories,” he said.

5:45pm Update
We’ve got everything from puppies, to proposals to squabbling at the polls to DOJ monitors in this update.
Outside of Westchester County, New York, there continue to be minor technical issues at the polls, as happens every Election Day, but nothing widespread or systematic.
Lansing, Michigan City Clerk Chris Swope told WKAR News that DOJ monitors have been spotted in the city. Swope said the monitors have been talking to some voters but have remained outside the 100-foot campaign-free perimeter required in Michigan. He said he has instructed poll workers to keep an eye on them. Also in Michigan, election officials say they contacted the U.S. Department of Justice on Tuesday after receiving reports that federal election monitors in Dearborn and Flint had questioned poll workers about their training, conduct which state officials said was outside the monitors’ legal authority. The presence of federal monitors drew concern from some New Haven, Connecticut voters. “It was very unsettling to have someone asking questions because your vote is supposed to be confidential,” Laura Cahn said.
And although we haven’t seen a news story yet, we have it on good authority that there was a proposal at an El Paso County, Colorado counting facility earlier today. We’ll keep you posted when we get more details.
We’ll be back at least one more time tonight and then back at it tomorrow morning bright and early with the regular 6am post.
